This season’s games in Mumbai have underlined just how volatile Wankhede can be. On 29 April 2026, Mumbai piled up 243 for 5 and still lost, as Sunrisers Hyderabad stormed to 249 for 4 in only 18.4 overs. The trend is clear enough: these sides are familiar with each other, and results have swung sharply depending on who wins the key phases.

For Mumbai, Hardik Pandya remains central to the balance of the side. As captain, his all-round contribution becomes even more significant in a game where tactical flexibility could matter. Since 2022, he has scored 1827 IPL runs and taken 40 wickets, and he has a standout record against Lucknow with the ball, including 5 for 36 for Mumbai on 4 April 2025. There are also useful matchup signals in his favour: he has dismissed Rishabh Pant once while conceding only two runs in five balls, and he has also removed Nicholas Pooran once.

Mumbai’s fast-bowling edge naturally begins with Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult. Bumrah has 86 IPL wickets since 2022 and was outstanding against LSG at this venue in 2025 with 4 for 22. His matchup numbers against Aiden Markram, Mitchell Marsh and Rishabh Pant all show at least one dismissal. Boult, with 94 wickets in the same period, took 3 for 20 against Lucknow at Wankhede in 2025 and has dismissed Ayush Badoni three times while conceding only eight runs in 13 balls. On a ground where pace has dominated wicket-taking, that pair could shape the game early and late.

Shardul Thakur offers Mumbai another seam option with a useful Wankhede marker already this season: 3 for 39 against Kolkata Knight Riders on 29 March 2026. He also has a previous three-wicket return against LSG at the venue from 2022, even though that came for a different side. For Mumbai, the seam attack carries much of the tactical burden here.

Lucknow will look towards Mitchell Marsh for batting thrust. Shami has reached 100 IPL wickets since 2022 and has dismissed Rohit Sharma once while also accounting for both Shardul Thakur and Trent Boult in previous meetings. Nortje’s raw pace has also brought him success against Mumbai before, including two wickets at Wankhede in both 2022 and 2024, and he has dismissed Suryakumar Yadav once in a very small sample.

This match may well come down to which pace attack controls the powerplay and which side manages the death overs with more composure. Wankhede has rewarded clean hitting, but it has also punished missed lengths. Mumbai have the stronger recent pace returns against this opposition, especially through Bumrah and Boult, while Lucknow need Marsh to give them a platform and their own quicks to make inroads into a batting order that can be explosive but inconsistent. With both teams trying to halt difficult runs, the stakes are obvious, and that should make for a tense, high-tempo evening in Mumbai.
