Washington Sundar

Washington Sundar, born on October 5, 1999, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, is a distinguished left-handed batting all-rounder and right-arm off-spin bowler. His cricket journey began with a strong domestic career playing for Tamil Nadu, where he impressed by scoring his maiden first-class century against Tripura during the 2017-18 Ranji Trophy. Sundar's breakthrough moment on the big stage came when he was selected by the Rising Pune Supergiants in the 2017 IPL season as a replacement for Ravichandran Ashwin, debuting at just 17 years old. Since then, he has been a regular in the IPL, playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore and later the Gujarat Titans, known for his economical bowling and crucial lower-order batting contributions. He was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2022 IPL auction for a significant amount, showing the faith franchises placed in his potential.

Internationally, Washington Sundar made his ODI debut in December 2017 against Sri Lanka and soon after became the youngest player to debut for India in T20 Internationals at 18 years and 80 days. He was named the Player of the Series in the 2018 Nidahas Trophy due to his economical bowling and impactful performances. Despite primarily being perceived as a bowler, Sundar has shown remarkable resilience with the bat, especially during his Test debut at the Gabba Test in January 2021, helping India secure a historic series win against Australia with a crucial 62 runs in his first innings. Continuing his rise, he scored his maiden ten-wicket haul in Tests against New Zealand in 2024 and notched up a maiden Test century against England during the 2024-25 series.
