Taijul Islam
Taijul Islam is a veteran left-arm orthodox spinner from Bangladesh, born on February 7, 1992, in Natore. He rose through the domestic ranks with Rajshahi Division and made a strong case for national selection during the 2013–14 first-class season, where he claimed 55 wickets. Taijul made his Test debut against the West Indies in September 2014, where he immediately impressed with a five-wicket haul. Just a few months later, he delivered a record-breaking performance of 8/39 against Zimbabwe, which stood as the best bowling figures in Test cricket by a Bangladeshi at the time.
Taijul’s ODI debut came in 2014 against Zimbabwe, and he made history by becoming the first cricketer to take a hat-trick on debut in ODI history. Although primarily known for his Test exploits, he has remained a useful option in limited-overs formats when called upon. Over the years, Taijul has established himself as Bangladesh’s most consistent red-ball spinner, especially in home conditions. By 2025, he had crossed the 230-wicket mark in Tests, with over ten five-wicket hauls and multiple match-winning spells, solidifying his position as a mainstay in the Test setup.
With the gradual transition of Bangladesh’s bowling unit and the reduced presence of Shakib Al Hasan in Tests, Taijul has stepped up as the senior spinner and leader of the attack. Known for his accuracy, control, and ability to exploit spin-friendly conditions, he has often been the go-to bowler in crunch situations. His calm demeanor and ability to deliver long spells make him an invaluable asset for Bangladesh’s red-ball ambitions, particularly on turning tracks in the subcontinent.
