Barry McCarthy

Barry John McCarthy, born on 13 September 1992, is an Irish cricketer known as a right-arm medium pace bowler and right-handed batsman. He began his professional career with Durham in English county cricket, making his first-class debut in 2015 and T20 debut in 2016. McCarthy made his ODI debut for Ireland in June 2016 and his T20I debut in March 2017, where he notably took four wickets.

Recognized as a rising star after the 2018 Cricket World Cup Qualifier, McCarthy left Durham in late 2018 to focus on his international career with Ireland. He has been awarded central contracts by Cricket Ireland since 2019. McCarthy reached his 50th ODI wicket milestone in May 2019 and has been a regular member of Ireland’s squads for major tournaments including the ICC T20 World Cup qualifiers and the 2021 T20 World Cup provisional squad.

In February 2024, McCarthy made his Test debut in Ireland’s historic first Test victory against Afghanistan, taking four wickets in the match. He also set a record for best bowling figures in the 2024 Interprovincial Trophy with 5/3 for Leinster Lightning. In May 2024, he was named in Ireland’s squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, underscoring his importance to Irish cricket across formats.
