Kusal Mendis

Balapuwaduge Kusal Gimhan Mendis, popularly known as Kusal Mendis, is a professional Sri Lankan cricketer who plays as a top-order batsman in all forms of the game. Born on February 2, 1995, in Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, Mendis had a successful career at the youth level, being adjudged the 2013 schoolboy cricketer of the year and captaining the national youth and Prince of Wales College, Moratuwa teams. He made his first-class debut for Bloomfield Cricket and Athletic Club in 2015 and later represented Colombo Cricket Club, Kandy Tuskers, Galle Gladiators, Comilla Victorians, and Dambulla Aura in domestic and T20 franchise cricket, showcasing his talent in the 2019-20 Premier League Tournament with a maiden first-class double-century and a century.

Mendis made his international debut for Sri Lanka in October 2015, playing his first Test match against West Indies. He quickly adapted to the international stage, scoring his maiden Test century against Australia in 2016, becoming the youngest Sri Lankan to achieve this feat. In June 2016, Mendis made his ODI debut against Ireland and has since established himself as a key player in Sri Lanka's limited-overs teams, being named the ODI Batsman of the Year for the 2016-17 season at Sri Lanka Cricket's annual awards. Mendis has also represented Sri Lanka in T20Is, making his debut against England in 2016, and has been a consistent performer for the team, scoring over 3,500 runs in ODIs and over 4,000 runs in Tests, with 8 Test centuries and 3 ODI centuries.

Mendis' career has not been without controversy, as he was involved in a fatal road accident in July 2020 in Panadura, Sri Lanka, which led to his arrest. In June 2021, he was suspended from international cricket for one year for breaching the team's bio-secure bubble during Sri Lanka's tour of England, but the ban was later lifted in January 2022. On a personal note, Mendis married Travis Alabanza in February 2021, and the couple welcomed their first child, a baby girl, in June 2022. Despite facing some challenges off the field, Mendis remains committed to his craft and continues to entertain fans with his cricketing exploits, showcasing his aggressive batting style, compact technique, and iron resolve, which have the potential to make him one of the greatest batsmen Sri Lanka has ever produced.
