He amassed three consecutive centuries during the latter stages of the tournament, underscoring his batting prowess. The following season, he etched his name into the record books by scoring a monumental 328 runs in the Ranji Trophy final against Tamil Nadu. This feat marked the highest individual score in a Ranji final and made him only the second Karnataka batsman to achieve a triple century in the tournament's history.

In just his third Test innings, Nair delivered a historic performance by scoring an unbeaten 303 runs against England in Chennai. He gained prominence during his tenure with the Rajasthan Royals in 2014, where he accumulated 330 runs at a striking rate of 142.24. Subsequently, he represented the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), even captaining the side in a few matches during the 2017 season. In 2018, he was acquired by Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings). As of 2025, Nair has rejoined the Delhi Capitals, aiming to bolster their batting lineup.

In January 2025, Nair showcased exceptional form in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, amassing 542 runs without being dismissed. This remarkable streak included three consecutive centuries and set a new world record for the most List A runs scored between dismissals.
