Shai Hope

Shai Diego Hope, born on 10 November 1993 in Barbados, is a premier West Indies wicketkeeper-batsman and the current ODI captain. Renowned as one of the best contemporary ODI batsmen, Hope has received multiple accolades including West Indies Men's Cricketer of the Year (2018) and repeated selections in the ICC ODI Team of the Year (2020, 2022).

He made his Test debut in 2015 and quickly established himself with a historic performance in 2017 against England at Headingley, scoring centuries in both innings and leading West Indies to their first away win over England since 2000. Hope’s ODI debut came in 2016, and he scored his maiden ODI century in just his second match. In 2019, he was part of a record-breaking 365-run opening partnership with John Campbell, the highest in ODI history, and became the fastest West Indian to reach 2,000 ODI runs.

Hope has amassed over 5,000 ODI runs, becoming the fastest West Indian to this milestone and equalling Sir Vivian Richards’ record. He has scored 17 ODI centuries, ranking third among West Indies batsmen behind Brian Lara and Chris Gayle. In March 2023, he scored 128* on his ODI captaincy debut, becoming the second West Indian to achieve a century in that context. His leadership and batting have been pivotal in West Indies’ successes, including memorable wins against top teams like England, South Africa, and India.In May 2024, Hope was named in the West Indies squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, continuing his role as a key figure in West Indies cricket across formats.
