Afghanistan versus India T20I Series, 2026

Afghanistan will host India for a three-match T20I series at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, beginning on September 13, with the remaining matches scheduled for September 15 and 17. Although the entire series is being played in India, Afghanistan will officially be the home side, continuing their practice of staging home internationals outside Afghanistan. The contest forms part of Afghanistan’s Future Tours Programme and represents another important step in the growing cricketing relationship between the two countries. It will also be their first bilateral T20I series since January 2024 and comes only a few months after India defeated Afghanistan in a one-off Test and swept their three-match ODI series 3-0 in June.

India will enter the series as favourites and as the reigning ICC Men’s T20 World Cup champions, having lifted the trophy on home soil earlier in 2026. Their depth in the shortest format remains formidable, with players such as Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh and Varun Chakaravarthy among the names involved in India’s recent T20 plans. Samson was one of the standout batters at the 2026 World Cup, scoring 321 runs at a strike rate close to 200, illustrating the explosive batting resources available to India. The September series should also provide valuable competitive T20 cricket ahead of the Asian Games later that month, while giving India another opportunity to test their combination against a side whose spin attack is capable of creating problems even in familiar Indian conditions.

Afghanistan, however, have enough quality to ensure this is far from a routine assignment for India. Rashid Khan, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran, Mohammad Nabi and Mujeeb Ur Rahman form the core of a side with extensive experience in Indian conditions, and Zadran finished Afghanistan’s 2026 T20 World Cup campaign with an unbeaten 95 against Canada as they signed off with an 82-run victory. Afghanistan will also remember how close they came to beating India in Bengaluru in 2024, when the third T20I finished level before India eventually prevailed after an extraordinary second Super Over to complete a 3-0 series sweep. With both teams possessing high-quality spin options and aggressive top-order batting, the Arun Jaitley Stadium could produce three entertaining contests, and Afghanistan’s familiarity with Indian conditions gives the designated hosts a genuine opportunity to push the world champions much harder than the recent ODI scoreline suggests.
