Soumya Sarkar

Soumya Sarkar is a dynamic left-handed top-order batter and part-time bowler who has been a pivotal figure in Bangladesh cricket across all formats. Born on February 25, 1993, Sarkar made his international debut for Bangladesh in 2014 and soon established himself with aggressive stroke play and sharp fielding. He was part of Bangladesh’s Under-19 World Cup teams in 2010 and 2012, and made headlines for a controversial 'Mankading' dismissal in the 2012 edition. Sarkar’s domestic career includes a record-breaking 208 not out in List A cricket for Abahani Limited, becoming the first Bangladeshi batter to score a List A double century, featuring 16 sixes. In the Bangladesh Premier League, he has represented franchises like Rajshahi Kings, Cumilla Warriors, and Gazi Group Chattogram, and earned Player of the Match honors in domestic and international tournaments.

Internationally, Sarkar made his Test debut against Pakistan in April 2015 and scored his maiden Test century against New Zealand in 2019. He holds the record for most catches by a Bangladeshi in a single Test match and equaled the record for most catches in a World Cup match with four in 2015. His ODI career highlights include a highest score of 169 against New Zealand, setting the record for the highest individual ODI score by a Bangladeshi batter away from home. He became the fastest Bangladeshi to reach 2,000 ODI runs in April 2024. In T20 Internationals, Sarkar was the fifth Bangladeshi to cross 1,000 runs and has been key in several series wins, earning Player of the Series awards. His multifaceted skills with the bat, ball, and in the field make him an integral part of Bangladesh cricket’s plans for the future.
