The inaugural European T20 Premier League gets underway on August 26, 2026, launching an ambitious new chapter for franchise cricket in Europe. The ICC-approved competition brings together six city-based franchises from Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands: Amsterdam Flames, Belfast Wolves, Dublin Guardians, Edinburgh Castle Rockers, Glasgow Cosmic and Rotterdam Dockers. A total of 32 matches will be played through September 20, beginning at Voorburg in the Netherlands before the tournament moves to Malahide in Ireland for the latter stages. The league phase features each side battling for a place in the playoffs, with Malahide also hosting the Qualifier and the tournament final.
The ETPL has attracted considerable star power for its first season, combining established international cricketers with leading and emerging players from across European cricket. Amsterdam Flames will be led by Mitchell Marsh and feature Steve Smith and explosive finisher Tim David, while Glenn Maxwell captains the Belfast Wolves. Ravichandran Ashwin takes on a captain-and-mentor role with the Rahul Dravid-owned Dublin Guardians, Mitchell Santner provides world-class all-round quality for Edinburgh Castle Rockers, and former Australian opener Matthew Hayden heads the Glasgow Cosmic setup as co-owner and head coach. Rotterdam Dockers boast an imposing South African influence, with captain Faf du Plessis joined by Heinrich Klaasen and an ownership group that also includes Jonty Rhodes. The presence of such experienced names alongside locally drafted Irish, Scottish and Dutch players should make squad depth and adaptability one of the defining themes of the competition.
Beyond deciding its first champion, the European T20 Premier League carries broader significance for cricket in the region. The competition has been designed to give players from Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands regular exposure alongside established international performers while creating a high-profile franchise product capable of attracting new audiences across Europe. Amsterdam's heavyweight batting group and Rotterdam's experienced T20 core immediately stand out on paper, but the short format and unfamiliar combinations should leave plenty of room for the other four franchises to challenge. With six teams representing three countries, two contrasting venues and a month of T20 cricket culminating in the September 20 final at Malahide, the inaugural ETPL has the opportunity to establish itself as an important new fixture on the European cricket calendar.
