Andy Balbirnie

Andrew Balbirnie, born on 28 December 1990 in Dublin, is an accomplished right-handed batsman and occasional wicket-keeper who currently captains Ireland’s Test cricket team. A product of Ireland’s youth system, he captained the Under-19 squad to victory in the 2009 World Cup Qualifier and made his international debut in 2010. Balbirnie was part of Ireland’s historic first Test match in 2018 and has since become a mainstay across all formats, known for his classical batting style and leadership qualities.

In November 2019, Balbirnie was appointed captain of Ireland’s Test, ODI, and T20I teams, succeeding William Porterfield and Gary Wilson. Under his captaincy, Ireland achieved several milestones, including their first ODI win against South Africa in 2021, where Balbirnie scored a century. He was Ireland’s top scorer in the 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, leading the team to a famous victory over England. In 2023, Balbirnie stepped down as limited-overs captain but continues to lead the Test side, guiding Ireland to its first Test win in March 2024. He remains a pivotal figure in Irish cricket and was named in the squad for the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
