Temba Bavuma

Temba Bavuma returns to captain South Africa in the three-match ODI series against Australia, having last featured in the format in December 2025. The right-handed top-order batter has been an important part of South Africa’s ODI setup for several years and brings a composed approach to the opening position. His leadership experience will be particularly valuable as the Proteas continue shaping their combination ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup. Bavuma will lead the side in all three matches, with the series scheduled in Durban, Johannesburg and Potchefstroom from September 24 to 30.

Bavuma’s batting revolves around timing, placement and the ability to build an innings rather than relying solely on power. As an opener, he can absorb the pressure of the new ball, rotate the strike and lay the foundation for South Africa’s aggressive middle order. His familiarity with Australian bowlers and conditions should also help him handle a challenging opening spell, while his captaincy gives him an additional responsibility throughout the contest. With Quinton de Kock, Ryan Rickelton and Tony de Zorzi providing other top-order options, Bavuma’s role will be to provide stability and establish partnerships at the beginning of the innings.
