JJ Smuts

JJ Smuts is an experienced batting all-rounder who combines powerful right-handed strokeplay with slow left-arm orthodox spin. He has spent much of his career opening or batting near the top in T20 cricket, where his strong hitting and ability to contribute economical overs give sides valuable balance.

Smuts represented South Africa in T20 internationals and built a substantial franchise and domestic career before becoming eligible for Italy through his family connection. He joined Italy for the 2026 T20 World Cup, bringing top-level experience to a side making its first appearance at the tournament.

His versatility is especially valuable in T20 cricket because he can influence the powerplay with the bat and then provide spin through the middle overs. Smuts also brings years of professional experience, making him a useful tactical and leadership presence in addition to his direct on-field contributions.
